Attorney Seeks to Reinstate Millions Awarded in Police Shooting Case
(Black PR Wire) BALTIMORE─The attorney representing the family of a 23-year-old single mother who was shot and killed by a Baltimore police officer in 2016 is taking proactive steps to clinch the multi-million-dollar jury awarded to her family in a wrongful death lawsuit. Attorney, J. Wyndal Gordon, the attorney in the highly publicized shooting death of Randallstown resident Korryn Gaines, announces he will seek alternative means to ensure the family receives justice.
In 2018, a grand jury awarded the victim’s family $38 million in damages after determining that Corporal Royce Ruby Jr. violated Gaines’ civil rights under federal and state statutes when he fatally shot her and wounded her then 5-year-old son, Kodi following a standoff. A year later, in an unusual turn of events, a Baltimore County Circuit Court Judge reversed the decision citing “Qualified Immunity” which shields law enforcement and government officials from civil liability when carrying out their duties. In 2020, a Special Appeals Court ruled to reinstate the $38 million originally awarded, but the family has yet to receive anything!
Counsel for Korryn Gaines asserts County Executive John Olszewski have failed to take this case seriously. Although the courts found that the trial judge violated the law in taking the original verdict away in 2020, there is still no movement on the case.
Attorney Gordon is pursuing further actions on issues regarding the case, including, but not limited to:
- Reopening a criminal investigation to officially charge Corporal Royce Ruby with murder
- Demanding the county demonstrate financial responsibility to the family and resolve the case so healing can begin.
- Urging Baltimore County PD to employ innovative solutions in addressing mental health crisis’ calls.
Attorney Gordon continues to pursue this case until justice is rightfully served.
