(BPRW) How COVID-19 has Impacted Minority Communities

(Black PR Wire) The COVID-19 crisis has tremendously impacted minority communities throughout the country. With Americans isolated in their homes and millions unemployed, the impact is being felt more and more every day. It’s no secret that disadvantaged and minority communities are experiencing higher rates of infection and death from the disease. On top of that, there is greater economic impact because social factors that normally challenge our communities have been inflamed by this global health crisis.

According to the CDC, blacks account for 18.5% of COVID-19 cases and 21% of deaths while Hispanics/Latinos account for 29.5% of COVID-19 cases and 16.7% of deaths. These statistics are fluid and change on an ongoing basis. Obviously, COVID-19 has changed our daily routine. It’s up to each and every one of us to adhere to healthy and safety tips to combat COVID-19 in minority communities:

  • Remember to practice social distancing. If you are around other people, make sure that there is at least 6 feet between you, when possible.
  • Avoid hugs, handshakes, large gatherings and close quarters.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when around others and out in public, such as the grocery store.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water – 20 seconds or longer (or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol).
