- San Francisco neighborhood has sought more fresh food options for generations -
(BLACK PR WIRE)--SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market today opened its second store in San Francisco, in the underserved Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood. San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and Board of Supervisors President David Chiu joined Fresh & Easy’s executive board, and dozens of neighborhood leaders in opening the store.
“I made a commitment to the community to improve Bayview-Hunters Point and make it a place that is safe and healthy for families,” said Mayor Lee. “This project is a cornerstone in our broader efforts to revitalize the neighborhood by bringing healthy food, vibrant businesses, and new shoppers to Third Street.”
“It is wonderful to see a new grocery store open in the Bayview, bringing jobs and fresh food to the community. The Board of Supervisors is very committed to ensuring that all San Franciscans have access to healthy food," said Board President Chiu.
Crowds of welcoming neighbors in the Bayview neighborhood came out to celebrate the first new grocery store to open in their community in the past 20 years. The Bayview is traditionally an underserved neighborhood, where about 36,000 people are without access to fresh fruits and vegetables because of lack of supermarkets in the area.
“Fresh and Easy is making more than just a business investment in the community, they are making an investment in health by providing access to fresh, high-quality food to a neighborhood that has historically lacked access to better options for generations,” said District 10 Supervisor Malia Cohen.
For each store opening, Fresh & Easy invites neighbors to nominate a local, non-profit organization to receive a $1,000 donation. Based off nominations from neighbors, store employees selected the Bayview-Hunters Point YMCA, which provides countless services for local residents of all ages.
“We’ve worked hard to create a thoughtful business built on a simple belief: everyone deserves fresh, wholesome food at affordable prices regardless of where they live,” said Fresh & Easy CEO Tim Mason. “The City of San Francisco was a fantastic partner in getting this store built, staffed and opened.”
