(BPRW) BPRW Recognizes FAMU Students for Participation in Writer's Project

(Black PR Wire) TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Black PR Wire, the nation’s first and largest black news distribution service, visited the campus of Florida A&M University Dec. 1, 2009, to acknowledge students for participating in the HBCU Writer’s Project. After having more than 20 stories published on Black PR Wire, FAMU was recognized as 2009’s No. 1 institution in the project.

The event included local media and school leaders. The university provost, chief communications officer and deans of the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication and School of Business & Industry praised the recognized students for their accomplishments. Students enrolled in Professor Gina Kinchlow’s senior PR Practicum class led the effort in submitting the most stories. The class was awarded a laptop computer with individual students receiving certificates and Black PR Wire branded gifts. One student, Jeanine James, received a special award for having five stories published, more than any other student in the country.

“The students at FAMU have done an outstanding job over the past three semesters,” said Tyrone Hall, coordinator of the HBCU Writer’s Project for Black PR Wire. “Their consistently high-quality writing and dedication to the project is an example for other HBCUs to follow.” The HBCU Writer’s Project allows writing and journalism students from historically black colleges and universities throughout the nation to submit writing samples for review, after which approved samples are posted on Black PR Wire’s news distribution Web site. Posted stories have received thousands of views, and been periodically selected for reprint by interested publications across the country.

Students benefit from the project by having published news stories for their portfolios, a requirement for graduation and securing postgraduate employment. “I am so proud that Black PR Wire has made a meaningful impact on the development of these talented students,” commented Bernadette Morris, president and CEO of Black PR Wire, when asked about advantages the project provides. “It is important that our company reaches back to nurture the next generation of PR professionals, and I think we are doing that effectively.”
